Why EYFS Speech and Language Staff Training is Essential

Communication is the foundation for all early learning, social interaction, and emotional self-regulation. When children experience speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN), or face the complex dual challenge of navigating multiple languages alongside communication difficulties, the risk of frustration, behavioural distress, and social isolation increases significantly. Furthermore, undiagnosed SLCN often manifests as social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) difficulties, leading staff to misinterpret communication frustration as intentional defiance or behavioral disturbance. This masterclass equips practitioners with the knowledge to identify the root causes of communication barriers, apply inclusive floor-level scaffolding, support multilingual children with cultural humility, and build effective partnerships with families to ensure every child finds their voice.

The EYFS Speech, Language and Communication Needs Training CPD Course Breakdown

This masterclass provides a comprehensive, four-part framework designed to build setting-wide expertise in speech, language, and communication development. Module 1 explores the dynamic process of learning more than one language. Practitioners learn to identify typical bilingual development milestones, value home languages as vital cognitive foundations, and use visual strategies, gestures, and environmental adaptations to support children through silent phases and language mixing without pathologising natural multilingualism.

Module 2 turns to positive practice for identified SLCN, covering practical strategies for speech sound development, vocabulary acquisition, and sentence processing. In Module 3, the curriculum examines the deep connection between SLCN and SEMH needs, unpacking how expressive and receptive language deficits trigger emotional dysregulation and social withdrawal. Finally, Module 4 equips staff to partner effectively with parents and carers, establishing accessible communication channels, offering non-judgmental guidance for home language environments, and co-creating unified strategies that support children's communication growth across both home and setting.
