Roles, Statutory Duties, and Practice
This session covers the essential roles, duties, and statutory responsibilities expected of early years practitioners under government guidance. We examine the core framework needed to keep children safe, maintain statutory compliance, and act with confidence.
- Government Rules & Statutory Guidance: Understanding key statutory requirements, setting responsibilities, and staff duties under current UK guidance.
- The 4 Main Areas of Abuse: Deep-dive into recognizing physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect within early childhood development.
- Recognizing Signs & Indicators: Spotting subtle physical, emotional, and behavioral indicators in 0–5s.
- Procedures to Follow: Clear, step-by-step processes for recording, reporting, and escalating concerns internally and externally.
- Contextualized Safeguarding: Understanding risks and vulnerabilities that occur outside the child's home and immediate family environment.
- Professional Curiosity: Developing the confidence to respectfully question, probe beyond surface-level handovers, and avoid taking situations at face value.
Saturday 10th October | Behaviour as Communication
Reframing Responses, Emotion Coaching, and Behaviour Plans
When young children display challenging behaviour, traditional reward and punishment systems often fail because they focus on the outcome rather than the root cause. This session reframes behaviour as a form of communication—an unmet need, sensory overload, or developmental stress response—and gives practitioners a clear toolkit for every stage of dysregulation.
- Brain Development & Stress Responses: Understanding what happens in a child’s brain during emotional dysregulation and why "behaviour" is always a signal.
- Decoding Root Causes: Identifying underlying sensory processing needs, emotional stressors, and communication barriers behind both minor and escalated behaviours.
- Emotion Coaching in Practice: Implementing the core steps of Emotion Coaching to help children recognize, name, and regulate their feelings safely.
- Managing Minor vs. Escalated Behaviours:Proactive strategies for addressing minor day-to-day disruptions, pushback, and boundary-testing before they grow.Safe, confident, and relational responses for handling high-level escalated behaviours such as biting, kicking, hitting, and severe meltdowns.

Saturday 17th October | Planning Tailored to Development Matters
Breaking Down Goals, Micro-Moment Planning, and EYFS Area Modules
Designed to turn abstract developmental goals into clear, everyday practice, this session breaks down the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) area by area. You will learn how to take statements from Development Matters, deconstruct them into observable micro-steps, and deliver them through intentional adult-led activities, responsive micro-moment planning, and high-impact continuous provision.
- EYFS Area-by-Area Modules: Dedicated deep dives across the EYFS areas of learning, exploring how developmental goals look in real-world early years environments.
- Deconstructing Development Matters into Micro-Steps: How to break down broad developmental statements into small, clear, observable milestones so you can accurately pinpoint where a child is and what their exact next step should be.
- Connecting Goals to Provision & Practice: Taking a specific developmental goal and systematically mapping out how to achieve it using three core planning approaches:Adult-Led Planning: Designing targeted, intentional group or 1-to-1 activities that teach new skills directly.Micro-Moment Planning: Spotting and seizing spontaneous "in-the-moment" teaching opportunities during child-initiated play.Continuous Provision: Enhancing interest areas (water, construction, roleplay, mark-making) with materials that naturally prompt children to practice target goals independently.

Understanding Profiles, Neuroinclusive Spaces, and Early Support Plans
Early identification and targeted intervention make a life-changing difference for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This practical session breaks down key SEND profiles and equips practitioners with low-cost strategies, environmental tweaks, and early planning frameworks to support every child before formal EHCP processes begin.
- Understanding Common SEND Profiles: Modular deep dives into key developmental differences, including a clearer understanding of autism spectrum conditions, neurodivergent traits, and sensory processing needs in early childhood.
- Early Identification & Spotting Indicators: Recognizing early signs of Speech, Language & Communication Needs (SLCN), sensory sensitivities, motor difficulties, and broader developmental delays.
