Navigating Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn: Understanding Defensive Nervous System States in the EYFS

In any early years setting, we often label behaviour as "naughty," "difficult," or "defiant." However, from a neurological perspective, these behaviours are often survival responses. When a child—whether they are a 9-month-old infant or a 4-year-old preparing for school—experiences a threat, their nervous system shifts into a protective gear.

Recognising these four states—Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn—is essential for any practitioner working across the EYFS.

The Four Faces of Nervous System Regulation

When a child’s window of tolerance is exceeded, their autonomic nervous system shifts from a state of "social engagement" into a protective state.

  • Fight (The Mobilised Attack): Seen in infants as arching their backs or scratching; in older children as physical aggression, shouting, or defiance. The underlying need is to re-establish safety through control.

  • Flight (The Mobilised Avoidance): Seen in infants as turning away or avoiding eye contact; in older children as running away, hiding, or extreme distraction. The need is to escape overwhelming stimulation.

  • Freeze (The Immobilised Stasis): Seen in all ages as "blank" expressions, holding their breath, or appearing unresponsive. The need is to become "invisible" to survive perceived overwhelming danger.

  • Fawn (The People-Pleasing Response): Often missed in older children. These children become hyper-compliant, constantly seeking approval to ensure they aren't abandoned. The need is to appease the adult to maintain connection.

Moving From Control to Co-Regulation

Regardless of the child’s age, your role as an educator is to move from "behaviour management" to "nervous system support."

  1. Stop, Drop, and Observe: Before intervening, ask: Is this child trying to be difficult, or are they trying to be safe?

  2. Match, Then Lead: You cannot calm a child in "Fight" mode with an authoritative voice. Match their energy with a calm, steady presence, then slowly bring your own tempo down to guide them back to a calm state.

  3. Provide a Safe Harbour: Whether it is a sensory-soothing corner for a baby or a quiet "den" for a preschooler, ensure there is a space where sensory demands are removed.

  4. Validate the Emotion: Use simple labels to connect physiology to feelings: "Your body feels like it needs to run really fast right now. I am here with you while you get safe."

Strategic Leadership Checklist

  • [ ] Audit Your Environment: Are there sensory triggers (loud noises, bright lighting, cluttered displays) pushing children into "Flight" or "Freeze" across all age groups?

  • Compliance vs. Wellbeing: Ensure your setting does not unintentionally reward the "Fawn" response. Do you value quiet, compliant children more than those expressing developmental needs?

  • [ ] Comprehensive Staff Training: Does your team understand that a child in a defensive state is neurologically unable to learn? Provide training that shifts the focus from discipline to neurobiology.

The Bottom Line: When we view behaviour through the lens of the "Four Fs," the narrative shifts from management to support. By becoming an anchor for their regulation, you build the foundation for lifelong mental health for every child in your care.
